Tip - Write to Give & Don’t Write to Profit
Posted by Abdz - 09/07/09While there are many financial reasons that people choose to start a blog, the best way to have a successful blog is to do it because you love it. Writing blogs to help people, give them advice, offer tips and provide insight should be a fun exercise and something you enjoy doing to give back to the community. If you have certain areas of expertise that you can share with others, you should start a blog because you really want to share with the world. It is easy to say that you should only write for fun, but in this world you also have to make money – and time is money. The key is to strike a balance between writing your blog as a hobby as writing as a career.
When we say don’t write for profit, we mean that you should not just write anything and everything for the sake of writing. You should be passionate about your blog and want to write it. You should not start a blog simply because you want to make money from it. Choosing the topics of your blog is important. You might enjoy gardening and want to share your knowledge with others, but this is not to say you cannot earn a little money on the side. You might find that after a while your blog becomes very popular. Once this starts happening those in the gardening industry will want to pay to advertise on your website. You should not say no to this of course. You can earn money from your blog, but you can still blog for fun and not give up your day job.
If you want to work purely from home writing for your blog, you can do this of course. You should be aware though that you will not make tons of money from this and you might not be profiting at all for a while. You can earn a tidy sum of money once you get the advertising going and find other ways to earn money with blogging. This could be writing blogs for other websites as a freelance writer.
Know How to Write
Most importantly when writing, you should have a certain skill for it. Many people choose to write online because they feel that it is an easy way out, but if you have no real talent in writing, it is not a very good idea. You will only be setting yourself up for disappointment as you will not be accepted for many writing jobs and the ones that you are accepted for might pay very little. If you want to write your own blog, your skills do not matter all that much, but if people cannot really understand what you are talking about and what you are trying to tell them, you will find that you do not get very many readers.
An idea that you can follow up on if you love writing, but are not very good at it, is to take a short writing course. This will give you all the basics you need of how to structure your blogs and give you correct writing styles.
